Crossbite

What are crossbite?

A crossbite occurs when the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of outside when the jaws are closed. It can affect the front teeth (anterior crossbite), the back teeth (posterior crossbite), or both. Crossbites may involve one tooth or multiple teeth, and they can be dental (tooth-related), skeletal (jaw-related), or a combination of both.

How does it happen?

Genetics & growth patterns

Natural differences in upper and lower jaw growth.

Early childhood habits

Prolonged thumb-sucking, pacifier use, or tongue habits that push teeth into misalignment.

Airway & breathing problems

Chronic nasal obstruction or mouth-breathing can alter facial growth.

Delayed or abnormal tooth eruption

Early loss of baby teeth or irregular eruption of permanent teeth.

What are its side effects?

How can it be fixed?

Treatment at AQR Orthodontics — Jumeirah, under the care of Dr. Abdul Qadir, depends on age, type, and severity of the crossbite.

Early/Interceptive Care (ages ~6–11)

Crossbites are best corrected early. Expansion appliances (such as rapid palatal expanders), face-masks (in some skeletal cases), and limited braces can guide jaw growth and tooth eruption into proper alignment.

Posterior Cross bite treatment

Comprehensive Teen Treatment

Braces (metal or ceramic) and clear aligners can correct single-tooth or multiple-tooth crossbites. Elastics and TADs (tiny anchorage devices) are sometimes used for precise correction. Expansion may still be possible during adolescence.

Adult Solutions

For adults, braces or aligners can address dental crossbites, while surgical orthodontics may be required for severe skeletal crossbites where the jaws are significantly misaligned. Restorative adjustments may be added in collaboration with your dentist when tooth size or shape contributes to the problem.
